Marriott is thrilled to continue his red hot scoring streak
Hatters striker Jack Marriott was thrilled his red-hot scoring streak continued with the winner at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
The 21-year-old had been in and out of the side under previous boss John Still, reaching eight goals before the manager departed.
However, since Nathan Jones has taken over, Marriott has started the last eight games, netting five times, to take his tally to 13 for the campaign.
On his haul, the forward said: “It seemed like I was stuck on eight for ages, now it’s five in my last seven so I’m absolutely delighted with that.
“It’s been up and down so far this season, I found myself out of the team and in the team, and this is my longest run in the team.
“I’m delighted to be doing well, scoring goals and I just want to do my best for the team and hopefully we can climb up.
“Hopefully I can score some more before the end of the season and fire us up the league.”
The goal when it came saw Marriott picked out superbly by Paddy McCourt’s pass and then find a miniscule spot in the bottom corner, beating Luke McCormick at his near post.
He continued: “When Paddy’s running with the ball, running at pace, you know if you make a run in the tightest of spaces he’ll find you.
“He’s played at a level where he will find you if you make those runs. He’s very good to play with, especially for someone like me and Craig (Mackail-Smith) who like to get in behind, he will find us and we’ll get chances.
“I saw Benno (Paul Benson) coming across, thought I’ll just hit it and luckily its gone in.”
Marriott could have had another late on when he was sent clear on the left and opted to shoot, with McCormick flicking out a glove to turn behind.
However, with Benson in acres of space for a tap-in, the striker knew he should have passed, saying: “I was in the wrong there, I probably should have looked up and I just didn’t look up.
“I don’t look at myself as greedy, if I’ve got the chance to score, I’ll try and take it.
“But never mind, luckily we’ve won the game, had we not, I’d expect a grilling.”
Jones had been impressed with the manner Marriott took his finish, but wasn’t overly happy with the late miss, as he said: “We got Paddy on it in a good area and once he’s in that area he can unlock anything with the ability he has.
“He did, it was a great, cool finish, but Jack had a great opportunity before that, something we’ve worked on.
“And then to be honest I wanted to donkey punch him at the end when he didn’t square it to Benno.
“But that’s the enthusiasm, he kept going and put in a real, real shift.”
