McGeehan aware it's make or break time for Luton

Monday’s defeat at Barnet, coupled with Wycombe Wanderers’ 0-0 draw against Notts County saw Luton fall eight points adrift of the top seven.

They now have eight matches left of the campaign to try and extend their season beyond May 7, and McGeehan has set his side the target of six wins at the very least.

He said: “A win would have set us up nicely, but we’ve still got to go into those games with belief and try and get six wins out of the last eight to give ourselves a fighting chance.

“So we’ll do that and keep fighting as there’s still hope.

“You look at it and everyone else, you’re expecting them to drop points, but you can’t keep looking at it and go, ‘oh if they drop points, if they drop points.’

“We’ve got to be putting the wins on the board against teams like Barnet and Crawley and we haven’t so it’s disappointing.

“We all want to be up the table fighting for the play-offs because it’s such a special thing to be involved in and we let ourselves down a little bit but we’ll kick on.”

Boss Nathan Jones certainly wasn’t giving up on the top seven either, although knew that his side had missed an excellent chance to make further inroads into the deficit by suffering only a second away defeat since he took over.

He continued: “I’m bitterly disappointed because it was a great opportunity for us and we didn’t take it.

“These things happen, we’ve got to dust ourselves down, we’ve got a big 10 days to prepare for.

“You’ve just got to stay in the hunt, focus on the next game, try and win the next game and then see where you are.

“We’ve just got to take every game as it comes and wherever we are at the end, that’s where we’ll be.”

Recalled centre half Magnus Okuonghae remained confident his side could bounce back from Monday’s disappointing reverse when near neighbours Stevenage visit Kenilworth Road at the weekend.

When asked if the play-offs were still a possibility, he said: “Definitely, that’s the aim.

“With our squad and the way the boys have been playing up until now, this is a minor set back.

“I think this is something we can come back from.”

Hatters kick off a crucial period in their quest with three home games in 10 days now, as they bid to turn round a hugely disappointing campaign at Kenilworth Road which has garnered a mere five victories so far.

They start against struggling Boro on Saturday, who had boss Darren Sarll and managerial advisor Glenn Roeder in attendance at the Hive on Monday afternoon.

Town then host surprise package Accrington Stanley the following weekend, before entertaining rock bottom Dagenham & Redbridge, now managed by ex-boss John Still, on the Tuesday as McGeehan continued: “It’s a big game at home this weekend.

“We’ll brush ourselves down and then go at it again with the same tempo that we’ve been doing for the past few weeks and hopefully we can crack on.”
