McGeehan backs Jones to manage in Premier League

Hatters are geared for a return the big time under new manager Nathan Jones according to midfielder Cameron McGeehan.

The 20-year-old has been hugely impressed with what he has seen from working with the new boss since he took charge just under two months ago.

Although Luton have more than likely left any play-off tilt too late for this season, McGeehan is extremely confident about the future, as he said: “I might be naive in saying it, but I think he will go on to not bigger things than Luton, but I think he can take Luton all the way up to the top.

“I think he’ll manage in the Premier League one day too, whether that will be with Luton, hopefully it will be.

“I think his attention to detail, the time he puts in, the work-rate, is second to none and not what I’ve seen before.

“I love working with him and we’re showing that it’s working well as well so it’s good.”

McGeehan is looking to be with Luton for the long term too, as his contract was extended for another year last week, taking him through to the summer of 2018.

He continued: “It was in my contract, so that was always going to happen.

“I had a 23 game clause, 23 starts in the league, so it’s nice and good to get it out of the way.

“Now I know I’ve got a two year bit of security and what the plan is with Nathan Jones as manager.”

Boss Jones was delighted to have secured the immediate future of McGeehan too and believes he has exactly the right attitude when it comes to improving his game.

He said: “He’s another one that we like working with.

“He’s a sponge, he wants to learn, if you tell him to do stuff or ask him to do stuff, he tries to take that on board.

“He’s chipped in with 12 goals so far which is a fantastic haul for anyone let alone a midfield player and a midfield player who’s played out of position at times.”

It promises to be another summer of change at Kenilworth Road this year, with Jones ready to trim the squad to work with a much smaller group next term.

McGeehan felt it’s something that is required too, as he said: “It’s definitely needed because we needed to get the squad down and have more concentration on the starting 11 and the subs.

“You’ve seen with the players that have gone, that’s football, that’s what happens.

“I think it will probably continue in the summer and he’ll bring in players that are going to live and breathe it like he said during interviews. So hopefully that will all come together soon.”
