McGeehan earns contract extension with Luton

The 20-year-old, who had signed a two year deal in the summer after joining permanently from Norwich City, has now agreed a further 12 months.

Speaking after today’s 2-1 win over Hartlepool, in which McGeehan, the club’s leading scorer, netted his 11th of the campaign from the penalty spot, Jones said: “He’s doing well, we’re pleased to have him at the football club, we love him here, he’s just signed a new contract, in terms of contract extension.

“We’ve had an option on him, we’ve taken up the option and we’ve extended his contract.

“We’re pleased because he’s the type of player we want here, young, fit, hungry, talented young players.

“We want them blended in with the experience we’ve got there and we’re pleased to have tied him down.”

Fellow goalscorer Craig Mackail-Smith felt it showed a real ambition from the club and believes his team-mate is destined for a increasingly bright future in the game.

On McGeehan, who has now scored an impressive 17 goals in 65 games for Luton, he continued: “It’s brilliant, he’s done fantastic. He’s been outstanding to be fair, he’s got forward, got goals, works hard and is very young.

“So he’ll learn the game more and improve even more. I’ve got no doubt he’ll definitely go up the levels, hopefully will do that with Luton for a bit and then see where that takes him.

“It shows the ambition as we’ve got some fantastic youngsters here and some good experience, so it blends well.

“Hopefully we can bounce off each other and push each other as players to get the best out of each other and drive Luton up the leagues.”

Meanwhile, Jones is continuing to look at his squad in detail, with 12 players out of contract in the summer, including the likes of Jake Howells, Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu and Mark Tyler.

However, on any future decisions, he added: “We’re still evaluating everything because there’s no point someone doing well for four or five games, getting a new contract and then going back to old habits.

“We have a big squad here, which needs to be streamlined. Those who do well and those who show consistency, because I don’t want one week to lose 4-1, one week to win 2-1, one week to draw, I want a consistent performance, what I can’t stomach is an an up and down.

“I need an equilibrium in performance, in results, so when I get that then we’ll be able to evaluate who we can move forward with and who we can’t and that’s a daily process.

“There’s a lot of things happened here that I need to change, a lot of daily things I need to change and we’ll do that little by little.”
