McGeehan would love to emulate stars Lampard and Gerrard

Watching the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard when he was a youngster is definitely starting to rub off on Hatters midfielder Cameron McGeehan.

The 21-year-old further displayed a knack that the likes of Lampard made a career out of at the weekend, timing his run to perfection to sweep home Jordan Cook’s cross for the only goal of the game against Accrington.

McGeehan has drawn comparisons to the Chelsea and England legend, who scored over 250 goals in his career.

However, he said: “I’m not saying I’m like Lampard or Gerrard, but at this level I’ve shown some similarities in the way I’ve scored goals.

“You watch the best players as you’re growing up and you try to take bits from it.

“I used to ball-boy Chelsea games for six years when I was there and you’re obviously watching the best players in the world every weekend.

“They’ve had unbelievable careers and if you get even a quarter of what they’ve had, then you’ve had an amazing career as well.

“You naturally grow as a player and find what you’re good at. With top managers like Nathan Jones, that helps you realise where your best attributes are used.

“The gaffer is getting the best out of me at the minute and it’s paying dividends for the team.”

McGeehan has now bagged nine this term, and 29 goals in 97 appearances for Luton at an average of one every 3.34 games.

He added: “I was in the box at the right time. I broke the box as much as I could.

“We just had to stick at it. I arrived in the box at the right time, which is what I’ve built my game on.

“I work hard at it. I based my game on it.

“I watch a lot of top players and try to emulate some of the goalscoring midfielders of my time. It’s going well. I’ve just got to keep at it and try to score goals for the team.”

It was certainly appreciated by team-mate James Justin, who added: “It doesn’t matter how they go in just that they go in. That’s why Cam’s scoring so many, he just finds the back of the net week in week out.

“We created quite a few chances, we just weren’t getting it over the line. Sheez’s (Alan Sheehan) free kick and then the follow ups, but we kept going, kept going, kept going and finally we got what we deserved.”
