O'Donnell looking to add more goals to his game

Midway through the first half, the full back let fly from 20 yards with a magnificent first-time strike that arrowed into the net, giving Glovers stopper Artur Krysiak little chance.

It was his second goal since arriving at the club in the summer of 2015, with the only other, an effort that was credited to him, after Ryan Hall’s shot rebounded off his back against Leyton Orient in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

O’Donnell said: “I didn’t really claim that one, I got given it.

“That’s (Saturday’s goal) more accustomed the goals I usually score, good moves or good strikes.

“It’s a goal, one in my Luton account, hopefully I can do that and cut out the mistakes and it’s a good season personally and collectively.

“It’s something I’m hoping to add to my game, I get forward often enough that I should be adding a few goals and as a team we can’t just rely on Jack (Marriott) and Hylts (Danny Hylton) and our strikers Josh (McQuoid) and Isaac (Vassell).”

When asked if it was the best strike of his career, O’Donnell continued: “I’ve got a few, my collection isn’t too bad. That was probably the cleanest I’ve struck one, so I’ll take it.

“Goal of the season? Early contender? No, it was only a goal, we didn’t get the three points which is disappointing, that would make it sweeter, but I was still delighted to score.”

On netting his wonder strike, O’Donnell raced to the bench to embrace kitman Darren Cook, as on the celebration, he said: “We’re a team, we’re all together, staff included and there was Daz the kitman, who does a lot for me personally and does a lot for the team.

“He fancied me scoring, I’m not sure he thought I’d score like that, maybe a set-piece, so I thought I’d go over and give him a hug.”

O’Donnell almost grabbed a winner too, swerving another effort narrowly over in the closing stages, as he continued: “I was getting a bit cocky, it opened up a wee bit, was getting shown inside and I’ve got that in my game.

“If he shows me inside I’ll go inside and hopefully punish them or link up and that’s one of the things I can bring to the game and keep it shut at the back too.”

Keeper Christian Walton was certainly impressed with the manner of the defender’s effort, adding: “It’s a great goal, great strike for him, I’m buzzing for him to get a goal and that put us on the front foot after the great last two games we’ve had, away at Plymouth last week and then again on Wednesday night (against Villa).

“It put us on our way, although it wasn’t to be in the end.”
