The Luton chief, who gave all of his squad a run-out during the match, said: “I thought we were excellent, it was exactly what we wanted from a pre-season friendly, a real good workout, no injuries, and I thought we were excellent in our play.

“We were excellent first half and I thought we should have gone in a few more up, but we looked lively, looked sharp.

“Then second half when we made changes, they came on and took that tempo on and forward and we ran out comfortable winners, so it was a good test.”

New signing Danny Hylton was on target, along with the likes of Cameron McGeehan and Josh McQuoid, with Jack Marriott netting a quickfire treble too as Jones continued: “It means more to them than it does to us as we don’t mind who scores, but it’s good for them all to get off the mark in the first pre-season friendly.

“Everyone looked sharp, everyone had a bit of desire about them to work hard to do well, to do the things we’ve been asking of the, very pleased.”

Meanwhile, after changing 10 outfield players in the second half and giving the likes of Tyreeq Bakinson, James Justin and Akin Famewo their chances, Jones was delighted with how they took them.

He added: “It was pleasing, they’ve looked sharp in training and the competition we have in those areas now is very very good.

“We’ll keep them all their ties and give them that real thrust and desire to do well and they’re in a good place at the minute, but we actually want them to get better.

“We’ve used the youngsters very well, they’ve stepped up, so now we have to keep our feet on the ground, keep trying to move forward and enjoying what we’re doing.”
