Potts is determined to take his chance

The 22-year-old struggled during his first season at Luton last season, with injury hampering his progress, while he also failed to dislodge Scott Griffiths and Jake Howells at times too, making just 14 league appearances.

However, with both players released during the summer, there is every chance Potts will start as first choice this year.

When asked about that, plus the season ahead, he said: “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it, at the moment, I just want to get the fitness going, get good performances in, solid performances in.

“Last pre-season I injured my hamstring and then did it again early on in the season as well, so I didn’t really recover until before Christmas.

“Then the gaffer came in and I got a few games towards the end and hopefully it’s just a matter of pushing on from there.

“We had the summer break, but I’ve worked on trying to keep myself fit and hopefully those injuries are behind me now and touch wood I’ll be fully fit throughout the whole season.

“It’s a big year for me and everyone I think, not only individually but collectively.

“We’re looking forward to it, I can’t wait for the first game already.”

Potts does face potential competition for his position though, with Alan Sheehan more than capable of playing left back, while youngsters James Justin and Akin Famewo are starting to contenders for the first team squad.

On the challenge, he continued: “I think the manager always said he wants two players for each position, and if you were a manager you’d want that anyway.

“So any competition for myself is good, definitely will keep me on my toes but won’t get me distracted from where I want to be and what I want to do, both individually and as a team.”
