Rea impressed by Hatters' defensive display at Argyle

Town defender Glen Rea was hugely impressed by his new side's defensive display as they earned a hard-fought 1-0 win at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

As they had done against Leyton Orient, the Hatters’ back-line stood firm against what was an aerial barrage at times from the hosts.

Bar one excellent save in the second period, keeper Jonathan Mitchell was relatively untested though, as Rea said: “As as defensive minded player, the clean sheet is unreal. We went out there, had a plan, got the goal and I thought we could have got a few more goals.

“It was a tough game, but we defended outstandingly.

“It was great to get away with the win, the whole team, even the subs who came on, everyone was unreal.”

Striker Jack Marriott was of the same opinion too, as he saw Luton comfortably defend the 1-0 lead he had given them on 28 minutes.

He said: “We can defend our box really, really well.

“We’ve done it a few times now, here and against Leyton Orient and that’s something you’ve got to do, especially when you come to places like this when they’ve got good attacking options.

“The lads gave us everything, we worked so hard throughout the 97, 98 minutes and I think we deserved the three points in the end.”

Town were quick to bounce back from the 1-0 defeat against Crawley the previous Saturday and Marriott felt getting their noses in front this time was vital.

He continued: “I think the difference in last week was they got the goal which maybe put us on the back foot a bit and we had to press and go after the game.

“Whereas this week we got the goal, but we didn’t really sit back, we still pushed on second half and we got in a couple of times.

“Maybe we could have made it a little bit more comfortable, but a 1-0 win away from home, especially having come so far on the coach, you can’t complain with that.”
