Rovers down Moles to move fourth

Barton Rovers took a huge step towards securing a play-off berth by beating second-placed Aylesbury at Sharpenhoe Road on Saturday.

Going into the game unbeaten at home in the league since August 19, spirits were heigh as keeper Kyle Forster made a good early save from Gareth Price.

A blustery wind didn’t help either side, as Rovers striker Rhys Hoenes looked dangerous all afternoon.

He was to net what turned out to be the match-winner on 35 minutes too, losing his marker to send a diving head from Ben Sawyer’s free kick past James Weatherill.

The visiting stopper then had to pull of a superb stop from Joe Reynolds after Lewis Putman’s shot deflected into his path.

In the second period, Aylesbury pushed on in search of an equaliser but it was the home side who created the best chance.

Putman beat his man on the edge on the 18-yard box and fired a thunderbolt at the goal only for Weatherill to make another stunning save.

The result saw Barton move up to fourth in the table and are now two points above sixth-placed Rugby Town with five games remaining.

Joint manager Richard Wilmot said: “Conditions dictated the performance but the three points are always the object which we achieved.”

Rovers travel to Egham Town on Saturday before hosting Royston Town on Easter Monday at Sharpenhoe Road.
