Sandy nets late Blues winner

Dunstable edged this Bank Holiday match with five minutes to go when sub Elliot Sandy converted a cross at the far post.

In a tight match this was well–deserved, since the Waders had defended with precision. Goalkeeper Ian Brown had denied the Duns on a number of occasions, and his counterpart, Luke Chambers did well to keep out one fine effort- albeit with an outstretched leg.

Monday saw unremitting rain throughout and a hard game was expected against Dusntable’s county neighbours. The opening pattern of play suggested strongly that this was not going to be a match with many goals, and both defences were in fine fettle. Ryan Plowright started in place of Newman Carney and he gave a solid performance.

A bit of promising artistry from Charlie Henry seemed to have excellent potential until his final pass was into unoccupied space. A shot from Gregory was on target but he was ruled off-side.

The midfield contest was very even in the first period but Dunstable were able to gain more freedom to move in the second half and they exploited it when they could.

Terry Dixon replaced David Hutton and Elliot Sandy came on for Charlie Henry. This was presumably with the tactical intention of increasing the firepower.

One of Henry’s last contributions was a shot that Brown needed to tip over the bar. A spot-on refereeing decision was the booking of Chris Marsh for simulation but it did not lessen the immediate appeal for a penalty by home supporters.

The goal came close to full time. Roache had again gained space and time on the right and evading the challenge he was able to send in a low cross which Sandy nudged in.

The points gained keep the Duns at a joint fifth position with a real tough game to come on Saturday when second-placed Redditch United are the visitors.
