Sheehan remains modest after wonder strike

With seven minutes remaining, the hosts were trailing 1-0 and on the verge of creating an unwanted club record of four consecutive home games without scoring, Sheehan struck.

There was nothing simple about the effort though, as the on-loan Bradford City defender watched the ball drop out of the night sky before unleashing a wonderful angled volley into the top corner.

On the strike, Sheehan smiled: “I just wanted to stick it in the stanchion and there it was!

“Then, I was thinking, get the ball back and lets go and try and win this game.

“We had a couple of chances at the end, hit the post and I thought we could have nicked it, so disappointing overall, we’ll take a point, but that’s life, we’ve got to get on with it.”

Boss Nathan Jones was quick to hail his defender for the quality of the strike, saying: “He was outstanding all night, the composure he shows, the distribution he shows is again, we talk about above the level.

“I got questioned who we let out to get him in, he showed he was an above the level player, the goal he scored was fantastic, but he’s been doing that for a long, long time.

“He’s very experienced, very composed, adds a lot to our game and I was very pleased for him.

“He’s a good footballer, that’s why he was brought here, we needed to add footballers to the side and he brings that real quality so we’re delighted to have him here.”

Sheehan had put through the same net on Saturday afternoon, although there was no celebrating that time, as he diverted Adam Campbell’s cross past his own keeper Elliot Justham for Notts County’s opening goal during the 2-0 defeat.

He continued: “The ball goes across the box, you stick your leg out and that’s the way it goes sometimes, but you’ve got to get on with it.

“Apart from the own goal I was quite happy with how we played on Saturday to be fair.

“It was nice to get on the scoresheet once more, but I’m disappointed overall not to get the three points.”

The recent addition was satisfied with Hatters’ performance overall though, despite Town failing to add to their tally of just three wins in front of their own fans this term.

He continued: “I thought we played very good football at times, created some good chances and did more than enough to win two or three games never mind one game.

“They tried to pack out the midfield, they didn’t cause us many problems which is a positive.

“We we limited them to very little chances, very little possession throughout the game and I thought only one team was going to win it.

“We were very comfortable at the back, they had a few long range chances, but I thought we were the better team by a mile to be quite honest.”

One issue that Sheehan did have was the way Hatters were breached on 70 minutes though as on-loan Everton midfielder Liam Walsh was given far too much time and space to slot past Justham.

He added: “It was a soft goal and we’re disappointed with the second ball on the edge of the box, we’ve got to be winning them, but we move on, it’s gone.

“Whenever anyone concedes a goal, people are going to whinge about it.

“Yeovil probably aren’t happy about the marking at the back for my goal, but that’s the way it goes.”
