Sweet believes Hatters can shock Villa in EFL Cup

Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet believe his side have every chance of causing an upset in the EFL Cup this season.

Luton were drawn at home to Championship side Aston Villa, who were relegated out of the Premier League last term.

They will travel to Kenilworth Road on Wednesday, August 10 as Sweet said: “It’s terrific because they are the biggest club in the competition in this round.

“It’s a Premier League football club, we all know that, it’s got history like no other.

“The interesting thing about that it’s doable for us, everybody will look at it, and with a bit of luck it’s doable for us.

“It’s a no lose situation for Luton Town, one of those where it’s a chance for us to perform on a stage and the chance for us to topple a big boy.”

The Villains endured a hugely disappointing season last term, but are now under new ownership with Chinese businessman Dr Tony Xia replacing Randy Lerner earlier this month.

Former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has taken over as the club’s new manager and is believed to have been given funds to strengthen his side ahead of the new campaign.

Town boss Nathan Jones said: “The Villa one has gained a lot of publicity.

“They’re the highest ranked team in the competition, due to their position last year, and it’s a real good game for the club, at home to a newly relegated Premier League side.

“It will generate a good bit of interest and we’re really happy to have that.

“It’s a good test for us, an early test, but one we’re going to
relish and the cup is a nice one to try and have a run in.”

Meanwhile, Hatters striker Jack Marriott added: “That’s a massive game.

“They’re arguably the biggest team we could have drawn in the first round and I want to play as many games as I can.

“Hopefully I will be selected and hopefully we can turn them over at our place.”
