An Aaron Clarke hat-trick (25, 63 and 86) and Kevin Ashwood strike (13) saw AFC Dunstable well beaten 4-0 at Colney Heath in the Molten Spartan SML Premier Division on Saturday.

Although missing a number of key players missing, AFC had no excuse for this woeful performance, lasting from the first to last minute.

Manager Alex Butler said: “This was a game to forget, the worst performance from an AFC team in years, and pre-match instructions seemed to be ignored.

“The modern game does not allow you to play regularly across your backline, but the biggest concern is how our players kept giving the ball away, and this needs to be addressed immediately.

“I take nothing away from Colney, they battered us on the day, but we have played better teams this season and won.

“Top-of-the-table Ampthill come to Creasey on Wednesday, I can guarantee two things, a far better performance and a changed team!”

From the start Colney were far more eager, and pressed high in a defence and midfield as AFC kept giving the ball away or were caught in possession.

And it was no surprise when Ashwood intercepted a poor pass on 13 minutes and fired past keeper Ryan Darby.

Similarly a midfield pass was intercepted and this time Clarke curled the ball past Darby for Colney’s second.

The only real chance for AFC in the first half came following a neat exchange in the box by Chris Francis, but Kyle Lincoln shot just wide from close range.

For once a stern half time team talk had no effect, with the normal AFC fighting spirit nowhere to be seen.

Colney continued to push and a defensive lapse allowed the ball to easily pass through the middle for Clarke to neatly round Darby and score the third.

And to rub salt into the wounds Clarke capped a fine individual performance and completed his hat-trick with a great 20-yard strike in the closing minutes.

On Wednesday, AFC host table-topping Ampthill Town, go to Pitstone & Ivinghoe in round one of the Challenge Trophy on Saturday and on Tuesday head to Leverstock Green.

Attendance: 63.
