Barton Rovers produced a fine display to hold Skrill South side Boreham Wood to a goalless draw in their FACup second round qualifying clash at Sharpenhoe Road on Saturday.

Rovers had the first attack early on when Bobby Dance forced James Russell into a diving save.

At the other end, Matty Whichelow fired over, before Rovers’ midfielder Alex O’Brien saw his shot deflected wide.

Midway through the first half Greg Morgan, fired inches widem before Billy Lobjoit was also off target.

Barton captain Tommy Hull was booked for fouling Wood’s on-loan Luton Town striker Jake Woolley, before Mario Noto fired the resulting free kick wide.

Rovers refused to let the visitors take the initiative and closed the first half strongly, as Rhys Hoenes, who gave the opposition trouble all afternoon, played a great ball in from the left that fell kindly to O’Brien but he couldn’t quite find the target, followed soon after by Paul Barnes firing over the bar.

In the second half, Rovers keeper Grant Beckwith tipped Ben Nunn’s long ranger over.

On 70 minutes, Rovers created their best chance of the game when Ricky Case’s quick feet set up Dance, but his effort struck the bottom of the Wood post.

The visitors also came close as substitute Raheem Sterling-Parker fired into the side netting with 11 minute remaining as both sides will do it again this evening for a tie with Maidstone United.

Barton boss Dan Kennoy said: “I feel a little disappointed if I’m honest. We had some really good chances to win the game especially in the second half but we were denied by the post and some rash finishing from Rhys at the end.

“But we are in the draw for the next round and we have run a Conference South side very, very close, so we can go to Boreham Wood on Monday night again with no pressure and everything to play for.”
