Dangerous Dunstable Town devoured previously unbeaten Calor Southern League Division One Central leaders Daventry Town as they came from behind to beat them 3-1 at Creasey Park on Tuesday.

The result meant brilliant Blues ended Town’s 100 per cent record as they inflicted their first defeat in any competition this season.

Director of football John McLoughlin was delighted after the Blues crashed out of the FA Cup at Needham Market at the weekend.

He said: “It was a fantastic performance against the unbeaten league leaders who were a strong outfit and we matched them and beat them with quality football.

“Every player was tremendous, especially Moses Olaleye who again produced not only a great performance, but led the team to a great victory. In some ways a cup run can ruin your league season and this puts us back on track.”

Dunstable looked dangerous from the outset and played with an unrelenting pace and verve for the whole of this pulsating match.

However, Daventry took the lead against the run of play on eight minutes when Mikel Beckley’s effort took two deflections on its way through Jamie Head’s legs.

Dunstable’s response was immediate as Tony Burnett powered home Chris Marsh’s sublime cross with a firm header to draw the sides level on 13 minutes.

The visitors had a golden chance when Ashley Robinson raced through, but shot well wide.

Harried Daventry were clearly rattled as they were forced into too many long balls as they tried to muscle their way back into the game.

But the Blues kept to their game plan and deservedly took the lead on the stroke of half time when Lee Roache’s shot was only parried by keeper Richard Morris and Marsh followed up instantly to give them the lead.

Dunstable’s unexpected dominance continued in the second half as Roache missed a sitter and Marsh shot narrowly wide.

And the Blues secured victory with four minutes to go when Roache tormented his marker in the penalty area before eluding the keeper to score a trademark goal.

Dunstable entertain Erith and Belvedere in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.
