Dunstable Town close the gap at the top of the Calor Southern League Division One Central table to just one point following a cracking 2-1 win at Egham Town on Saturday.

The Blues put in a gritty performance to claim victory on their first-ever visit to the Runnymede Stadium.

Director of football John McLoughlin said: “It was not one of our best performances, but you can’t expect to dominate games every week.

“At present our quality takes over and we were worthy of the three points and disappointed that we gave away another cheap goal.

“We have to be at our best every week and Egham caused us problems, but we overcame them and I thought we stuck together superbly and every player is fighting and working hard. What more can you ask for?”

Both sides pressed for an opener as home side’s keeper had to make a fine save to deny Nathan Frater’s fierce strike.

And Egham responded with a header from Joe Chandarin that brought the best from Jamie Head.

A controversial moment occurred in the first half when Head and Shane Graham, who would have been through on goal, collided, but the referee adjudged that Head had been fouled.

Dunstable began the second period brighter, exerting more pressure, although they looked vulnerable on the counter as Joshua Andrews and Jake Galbraith both had good efforts.

Tony Burnett was again a threat from the right flank for the visitors and opened the scoring from close range on 66 minutes following Danny Murphy’s corner.

Murphy and Danny Hutchins’ corners posed plenty of problems and the Blues doubled their lead with 11 minutes to play.

Burnett and Lee Roache both had attempts in a goalmouth scramble, but it was substitute Damen Pickering who got the final touch.

Roache then had a third chalked off for offside from Hutchins’ free-kick.

And the hosts were then reduced to 10 men when Roaches raced on to a long through ball and was brought down in full flight by Joshua Andrews who was duly dismissed.

Brendon Matthew scrambled home a consolation goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but Dunstable had already done enough to secure their second away win in a week.

On Tuesday Dunstable host Aylesbury in the first round of the Red Insure Cup and on Saturday entertain Peacehaven & Telscombe in FA Trophy first round qualifying.

Attedance: 98.
