Wilkinson urges Luton to cut out defensive errors

After shipping 17 goals in five matches, Town kept a clean sheet at Portsmouth recently, only to then ruin their good work, with two mistakes against Bristol Rovers last time out, during a 2-0 defeat.

Wilkinson, who was forced into a watching brief due to injury, said: “I think you’re always going to get errors in games, but it’s nullifying those errors in the right areas of the pitch, up the pitch instead of at the back.

“For us at the minute, it’s at the back, whoever’s playing, not just Scotty (Cuthbert) or Mags (Magnus Okuonghae), it could have been me or Mark (O’Brien), as it’s happened all season.

“I think the boys at Portsmouth absolutely defended for our lives. You’d probably say Portsmouth had the majority of the play, but the boys were absolutely terrific, then we let ourselves down a little bit at Bristol Rovers really.”

After being a regular in the Hatters side, Wilkinson has missed the last four games with a troublesome hamstring. However, he completed his first 90 minutes against Leyton Orient in the 1-1 Final Third Development League draw last Tuesday and is now looking to regain his place in the side.

Wilkinson said: “It’s totally different when you’re watching it from the side, so it’s nice to be back out there playing.

“The hamstring has been a bit dodgy of late, I just pulled up in training in the warm-up, it wasn’t right and has just been bugging me ever since.

“It’s good to be out there and training, getting 90 minutes under my belt and hopefully I’ll be back in the first team soon.

“We’ve had a spare week now, so I’m aiming to be back in contention for Cambridge.”
