Young golfers reach World Junior Championships

Dunstable Downs junior golfers Ryan Smith and Freya Daniels competed in the US Kids Golf European Championships at East Lothian in Scotland recently.

Over 500 competitors from 40 nations took part in the event held on Scotland’s historic Links golf courses, including Gullane, Craigielaw and Longniddry.

In the boys U12 section, Smith had scores of 74, 76 and 76 for a three round total of 226 (+10) which saw him achieve his best ever finish of eighth in a highly competitive field of 60.

During the competition, the youngster was able to experience playing with partners from USA, South Africa, Ireland, Holland and the Czech Republic and his score of 76 on day two was all the more impressive in the 45mph winds.

His top 10 finish has enabled him to qualify for the World Junior Championships at Pinehurst, USA, in August.

Daniels had scores of 89, 98 and 92 for a three round total of 279 to finish 13th in the girls U10 section.
