HOCKEY: Cook serves up a tasty treble

Emma Cook bagged a hat-trick as Chiltern Ladies picked up an excellent 4-0 win at Letchworth in their Five Counties Women’s League Division Two clash at the weekend.

Chiltern took control of the game very early, winning a free hit inside the opposition’s half, and an attacking run by Naomi Macdonald led to a short corner that Cook finished well.

Visiting keeper Katie Williams made some fine saves as Chiltern moved 3-0 in front by the break, with Cook netting again and Emma Bright on target.

Letchworth came back hard in the second half, forcing more excellent saves from player of the match Williams, before Cook completed her treble with a bullet shot.

Katie Street and Donna Brown made some great attacking runs on the wings, with Carolyn Doherty controlling the midfield as usual.

Chiltern now sit on top of the table and host Saffron Walden this weekend.

In Division Three, Chiltern’s IIs played out a 1-1 draw with Broxbourne IVs.

A hard-fought game saw both teams defend well, with Chiltern keeper Hayley Murphy making a fine save.

She was beaten before half time, but Chiltern fought back in the second period with a well earned equaliser from Jackie Dadd late on.

Holly Steward and Mandy Blackmore were named joint players of the match.

Goals from Carly Grimmer and Bethany Carlisle saw Chiltern IIIs win 2-0 at Leighton Buzzard in Division Five.

The visitors attacked from the off as Gill Sentinella, Carlisle, Grimmer and Mel Farrow all went close, while Buzzard’s attempts were snuffed out by keeper Tracy Farr along with defenders Shonagh Broad, Mary Prickett and Jocelyn Merriman.

In the second half, player of the match Grimmer opened the scoring, before Chiltern had to weather some heavy pressure until they added a second when Sentinella and Chris Chapman combined for Carlisle to slam home.
