KARATE: It’s sweet 16 for JKL

A squad of 16 JKL (Japanese Karate Luton) competitors were in action last weekend at the MixedMartial Arts Open Championships held in Staffordshire, winning a host of medals.

Rising stars Milena Kowalska bagged an impressive first in her Kumite (free fighting) and second in kata (forms), while Samy Hammoudi grabbed second in both Kumite and Kata.

Dominik Polak Bunbury came third in Kumite and Kata, with brother Jordan bagging second place in Kumite.

There was further success for JKL’s newest black belt, Feriel Siad, who took second in Kata, while Tremayne Barker was second in Kumite, Fleur Harris came third in Kata and Kian Jones was third in the Kumite.

New JKL squad competitors Natalia Nowosad, Jason and Lucas Lam and Jason Watkins all competedwell to make the medal podium, too.

In the Senior division, Tom Crabtree and Eammon Devane showed how to compete at an advanced level with Crabtree taking third in Kata, despite only returning to training in the last six months.

JKL Technical Director, Sensei Fred Daniels, said: “Despite the different martial art styles competing on the day, our students kept their cool.

“They displayed an excellent standard of karate, good spirit and attitude.

“We are all very proud of everyone.”
