Luton AC battle to second-placed finish

Luton AC, supported by Luton Rotary Club, finished second in their fourth Southern Athletics League Division Two North match at Parliament Hill in London at the weekend.

Basildon triumphed with 194pts, Luton were runners-up with 170, hosts London Heathside were third with 164 and Cambridge & Coleridge fourth with 162.

On the track there was a double victory in the 100m races for Tamyka Spence in 12.5secs and Alicia Sinclair in 12.6secs on her debut for the club.

Sinclair also finished third in the 200m in 27.2secs, with Sophie Billington a fine second in the B race in 27.0secs.

Billington went on to take third in a high quality 400m race in 58.8secs, with victory going to Anna Bright in the B race in 1.01.9mins.

Revee Walcott-Nolan won the 800m in 2.18.2mins and Jasmine Watson was runner-up in the B race in 2.35.6mins.

Claire McMahon triumphed in the 3,000m in 10.46.7mins and was ably supported by Freya Vafadari who was second in the B race in 13.16.4mins.

McMahon went on to finish third in the 1,500m in 5.09.5mins and Charlotte Kelly took second in the B string in 5.22.4mins.

Hannah Farmer came third in the 400m hurdles in 1.19.7mins and went on to finish runner-up in the 2,000m steeplechase with a new PB of 7.58.5mins.

In the field, Shanara Hibbert finished second by 3cms in a very close long jump competition with 5.29m, while Karen Vincent won the B string with 4.51m.

Vincent went on to finish fourth in the triple jump with 9.24m and third in the high jump with 1.35m.

She was well supported by Niamh O’Connor who leapt 9.01m for second in the B triple jump and Adeya Edwards who cleared 1.30m to win the B high jump.

In the throws, Suzanna Wise and Jo Blair combined well for a double victory in the discus with 34.57m and 29.13m respectively.

Wise also won the Hammer with 39.8m and was supported by Natalie Kimble who was second in the B string with 19.5m.

Kimble and Wise were both third in the shot with throws of 8.45m and 7.33m respectively, while Blair claimed victory in her main javelin event with a throw of 40.49m, with Edwards second in the B string with 27.18m.

The 4x100m relay squad of Spence, Billington, Hibbert and Sinclair came home second in 53.1secs, while the 4x400m relay team of Bright, Billington, Walcott-Nolan and Amalia Edwards ran a new club and Division Two cecord of 4.02.2mins to claim a magnificent victory.

In the men’s competition, Dave Burrell had a brilliant day winning three of the four throws.

He threw 11.39m in the shot, 42.98m in the hammer and 41.6m in the javelin and came second in the discus with 37.72m.

Son Jamie Potton-Burrell won the B hammer with 41.43m, was runner-up in the B discus with 26.93m and third in the B javelin with 30.44m, while Geoff Grinsted threw 10.15m for second in the B shot.

There was a fine victory for Jamie Baughan in the high jump with a new PB of 1.80m with Gareth Edwards fourth in the B string with 1.40m.

Baughan was also runner-up in the B long jump with 5.68m and Ezra Leonce was third in the A string with 5.95m, who went on to win his main triple jump event with a leap of 12.45m.

On the track, Josh Bada was just beaten into second in the 100m in 11.0secs with Ola Fisayo third in the B race in 12.1secs.

In the 200m Bada took third in 24.3secs, with Danny Bottesch fourth in the B race in 24.2secs.

Rhys Lewis triumphed in the 400m in 52.2secs, with Bottesch runner-up in the B race in 55.4secs.

Bottesch was also second in the 400m hurdles in 1.20.1mins, Gareth Edwards ran well for third in the 800m in 2.07mins and the injured Nick Choudhury filled in to take fourth in the 1,500m in 4.37.4mins.

In the 3,000m George Ward was fourth in 10.15.1mins and in the 3,000m steeplechase Shane Jay triumphed with a brilliant 10m 19.6s.

The final match of the season is at Stockwood Park on Saturday, August 10.
