Luton duo earn Great Britain U23 call

A FANTASTIC weekend for Luton AC saw two athletes gain Great Britain international calls and another two earn English school vests.

Both John McDonnell and Daniel Clorley had already gained qualifying times for the European U23 Championships and proceeded to prove themselves at the Aviva Trials at Bedford Athletic Stadium with some excellent performances on the track.

McDonnell, 19, battled hard to finish second in the 5,000m. Favourite Ross Millington, recently back from altitude training in Albuquerque, New Mexico, predictably left the field for dead with 800m to go.

But McDonnell finished strongly to forge ahead of the chasing pack.

Clorley was made to sweat for his place despite putting in some great runs.

He won his 1,500m semi-final with the same time as James Shane, who recently finished third at the televised European Team games.

After a blistering first lap Clorley dropped out on the third with Shane winning in a Championship record time of 3.40mins.
