The club was founded in the early 1990s, but this year has relocated to a site next door to Stopsley High School, following the closure of the Regional Sports Centre to make way for Luton’s new Inspire swimming and sports complex.

Club members and guests of the club’s sponsor, Napier Watson Consulting, enjoyed some friendly games of petanque together, followed by celebratory food and drinks.

Originating in southern France in the early years of the 20th century, petanque is the most popular form of the game of boules, in which players attempt to get metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden jack, or to knock opponents’ boules out of the way.

Club secretary Alan Roden said: “This new venue is already proving popular with players from across the region, and we are especially grateful to Napier Watson Consulting and Luton Borough Council for helping us move to our new home. I’d also like to thank Play Football, for making us welcome through the use of their excellent bar facilities.”

Luton Petanque Club is part of the Chiltern Region of the English Petanque Association, who are the current national champions. Over the weekend of September 14-15, Chiltern will be defending their title in the Inter Regional Championships at Hayling Island, near Portsmouth in Hampshire.

The club is actively seeking new members with sessions taking place on Tuesday afternoons at 1.30pm and Thursday evenings at 7.30pm.
