Luton RFC suffer heavy Brentwood defeat

London One North: Brentwood 48 Luton 10

Luton’s away day blues continued, as they succumbed to their third consecutive defeat in a month, losing 48-10 at Brentwood on Saturday.

The away side started the brightest in the windy conditions, with returning captain Tom Mahendran getting the first points on the board in the fifth minute.

Fellow returnee Rick Hobbs kicked through to make it 7-0, before the hosts came storming back.

They were level on 15 minutes after a magnificent darting run from scrum-half Declan Gillett, with Adam Thomas converting.

Luton were back in front on 18 minutes through Hobbs’ penalty after a succession of fouls from the home team.

Luton’s passing and movement with the ball seemed to be getting sharper.

Nonetheless, the tables were turned on the away side, as tight-head prop Luke Spellen was sin-binned for hands in the ruck.

Soon after that, Brentwood’s man advantage paid off as they put pressure on Paul Allen’s team, with Thomas kicking a penalty to make it 10-10.

On the stroke of half-time however, Brentwood were awarded yet another penalty from which Thomas made no mistake.

At the beginning of the second period, the roles were seemingly reversed as
this time it was the home team that looked sharp
from the start, with Felix Hares breaking away from Luton’s scattered defence in the 44th minute to touch down.

Adam Thomas made no mistake with his conversion as Brentwood led 20-10, while Thomas King then opened his account for the afternoon after a quick give and go passing move with Gillett.

Thomas made no mistake as he converted yet again to make it 27-10.

Things got worse for Luton as Thomas Simpson earned his side a bonus point with his try, before Thomas converted.

Despite initially surviving wave after wave of attack, the Luton backline was once again breached in the 71st minute through Felix Hares as Thomas against no mistake with the boot.

With Luton trying to regain some semblance of pride, Brentwood’s Jonathan Wylie went over the away side’s white line for the final time and Thomas’ 100 per cent conversion rate saw the final score read 48-10.

The result saw Luton slip to 10th in the table as they were leapfrogged by Old Priorians, who won 29-13 against Barking.

Luton are without a league game this weekend before hosting Ipswich on April 11.
