Luton Rugby too strong for Chingford

Luton recorded their third consecutive bonus-point victory with a 32-12 success over Chingford in London One North on Saturday, writes Stephen Richards.

Michael Weston’s first-half try was followed by second-half scores from Aiden Kenny, Tesh Edwards, Tom Wilmore and Kevin Scales as the visitors outclassed their opposition with a fine performance.

A largely uneventful first half saw Luton dominate but only managed to register an 8-0 lead by half time. Rik Hobbs’ eighth minute penalty opened the scoring before Weston broke away to go over on 15 minutes, Hobbs missing the conversion.

All Luton lacked in the opening 40 was finishing scoring chances but that was put right as they begun the second period in perfect fashion as Kenny applied the finishing touch to a good move between Wilmore and Hobbs, with Hobbs converting to build a commanding 15-0 advantage.

However that advantage was cut to 15-7 on 49 minutes when sloppiness in the Luton backline presented Chingford with the opportunity to score a try, which they took, with the conversion successfully dispatched.

Luton were soon back in charge though as Edwards’ try on 53 minutes extended the lead to 20-7 as Hobbs missed the conversion, then 15 minutes later, Wilmore added a fourth try, chasing a long kick upfield to race through unchallenged.

Hobbs’ conversion put Luton 27-7 up to seemingly settle the contest.

Chingford scored their second try of the afternoon with 10 minutes remaining but Luton had the last word through Scales’ late try with Hobbs converting to finish the scoring at 32-12.
