The hosts had taken an early lead with a simple move down the left that left the Vauxhall keeper scrambling.

Then came the moment of the game as Vauxhall drew level thanks to Mahmood’s milestone-reaching strike.

Stevenage retook the lead when a short corner was hit through the middle of the scoring area and past the statuesque Vauxhall defence as they trailed at the break.

The hosts’ simple game plan to exploit the lack of defensive cohesion meant they added to their lead with a rather tame effort from a penalty corner routine.

With a drubbing on the cards, some spark of desire was awoken within the visitors as a short corner awarded to Vauxhall was converted with a classic David Young strike.

However, as had been the story of the whole match, Stevenage were able to find gaps in the visiting defence and scored twice in quick succession.

Even a memorable goal from Zahid Khan, so often the match winner, could not turn the tide for the champions.
