Do you know mum who had triplets in L&D Hospital?

They include the mum in the photo above, who was pictured by the Luton News shortly after giving birth at the L&D in the 1960s.

But no further details are known and the hospital has asked the Yesteryear pages of the Luton News and Dunstablke Gazette for help in trying to trace the mother, her babies and the nurse.

The first hospital of any significance in Luton was the Bute Hospital, which opened in 1882. In the 1930s a 10-acre plot in Dunstable Road was purchased from Electrolux for £3,800 (£190,000 in today’s money)when the site was at the heart of the countryside.

Following major fundraising activities building started in 1937 and the hospital was officially opened by Queen Mary two years later.

In the early 1950s 1,300 babies were born each year in Luton and the L&D maternity unit had to turn away expectant mothers because the hospital didn’t have the capacity to deal with so many births.

Today the hospital has a large and busy maternity department employing 180 midwives.

A total of 5,500 babies were born there last year alone. The chances of having triplets with natural conception is around one in 8,000.
