Luton Town Football Club had reached the FA Cup final in front of a 100,000 crowd at Wembley Stadium for the first time.
Supporters joined long queues near Luton’s Kenilworth Road ground in the hope of obtaining a ticket, while public buildings, homes and shop window displays were decked out in traditional black and white.
For it wasn’t until the 1970s that the club changed its colours to the present day orange, blue and white.
‘Luton For The Cup’ and ‘Up The Hatters’ banners adorned the front of the Town Hall and the Luton News was invited to a local salon to take pictures of the players’ wives

Four years earlier, Luton Town FC had gained promotion to the top flight of English football, Division One, for the first time.
Then followed several glorious seasons during which it was unquestionably one of the best clubs in the country.
Luton had beaten opponents Nottingham Forest 5-1 in a League game just a few weeks before the Cup final, but they failed to perform at Wembley and lost 2-1.
It would be another 29 years before the club beat Arsenal in the Littlewoods Cup final at the famous stadium.
