On the right track

With the classic narrow gauge sand train now immortalised at the junction of Grovebury Road and Billington Road, here is a reminder of the real thing, at the northern end of the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway in 1967.

This shows a diesel locomotive and wagons crossing over the junction of Mile Tree Road and Eastern Way, on its way to the nearby processing plant. The plant is still there, although extensively modernised in the meantime, and the dumper trucks which replaced the railway still cross over the road at this point.

The narrow gauge railway is holding a special event on Saturday, October 1, when it commemorates 90 years since internal combustion replaced steam, and 30 years since the last sand quarry branch closed.
