Who do you think they are?

If so come along to the January meeting of the Leighton Buzzard and District Archaeological and Historical Society when Sarah Minney, a professional genealogist, explains how to trace your family tree.

The three photographs shown here are all thought to be from local families. The photograph of the old lady with a book (left), taken by William Piggott of Leighton Buzzard, was sent to the society from Canada where it was found in a family album. Her identity is unknown.

The two other photographs are thought to be brother and sister; the name “Mrs Puryer, South Street” is written in pencil on the back, with “Mrs P’s brother “ on the other.

By studying the fashions of the Victorian era it is possible to date photographs and, linking that to census returns, birth marriage and death certificates, arrive at a probable identification.

Further evidence can be obtained from the details of the photographer often shown on the reverse.

William Piggott continued the family business after his brother Theo’s death in the early 1890s.
