Here’s a view of Britain Street, Dunstable, in untidier days when a car workshop dominated the scene.

The photo is from a scrapbook belonging to Mr and Mrs Clive Hawes, who now live in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

They came to live at 22 Britain Street in 1949 when Linden Motors was carrying out vehicle body shop repairs at the bottom of the street, near the junction with Priory Road. The business extended as far as Lovers Walk where its owner, Victor Durrant, had his home. Mr Durrant, in his spare time, was a motorcycle scramble enthusiast.

This photo would have been taken in around 1962, before new houses replaced the car business. The colour picture of the same scene was taken last week.

Mr Hawes worked from 1957 at the Luton Motor Company at the Square, Dunstable.
