Parnell’s put to the sword by St Vincent’s

The red and whites of St Vincent’s edged to a 3-5 – 2-2 victory over Cambridge Parnell’s to record their second championship victory of the season.

Having overcome St Colmcilles of St Albans in the first round, classy St Vincent’s backed this up by with an even more impressive performance at Stockwood Park this week.

Both teams started well, gaining plenty of possession, but failed to score until the deadlock was broken by Luton-born Steve McKiernan with a fine point from play.

The referee was helping neither side with some questionable decisions and soon awarded Cambridge a very soft penalty which Padraig Finn converted. St Vincent’s regained their shape, especially with the introduction of Damien Gill, who scored a goal immediately.

The Luton side led 1-2 to 1-0 at the break, but Parnell’s were gifted another soft goal when confusion on the goal line allowed a 40-yard free to drop into the net. This only seemed to galvanise the Vincent’s team who replied with two goals by Brian Joyce and Gavin Kelly. Steve McKiernan converted four excellent frees as Vincent’s ran out easy winners.

St Vincent’s take part in their cup final on Sunday, with their League semi-final the following Saturday. A race night takes place at the Pines Hotel the same day. For information on the club call 07984 423612.
