The match was played for league points, plus the Tony Condon Memorial Trophy, a special event agreed by both clubs and now in its fifth year.

Leighton, who had won 12 from 12 games beforehand, kicked a penalty on 15 minutes to move 3-0 ahead.

Lukas Chamberlain failed to reply with his effort, before Buzzard went over for a well-worked try to increase their lead.

Dees pressed with aggression and determination, but their opponents held firm and after a handling error, stormed through for a breakaway to make it 13-0.

Worse was to follow before half time when Leighton made good use of an overlap to touch down for a converted try.

In the second period, Kevin Boland kicked an early penalty to give Dees their first points of the afternoon.

From this point, Dunstablians dominated as man of the match Shaun Mangan dominated, while Boland, Scott Warren and Jordan Warner all looked dangerous.

The trio combined for Dees’ first try too as Boland used Warren as a dummy runner before unleashing an audacious dink to Warner, who sprinted over.

Ashley Warren made tackle after tackle, but try as the might, the hosts couldn’t score a levelling try as Nate Dominique, Max Thorne and Jack Newton all came close.

Dunstablians first and seconds travel to Lutterworth next week and spectators will be able to travel up on the team coach leaving Bidwell Park at 11.15am.
