The event had been monopolised by the home club, but the South Beds side, containing a blend of experience with captain Charlie O’Brien, Paul Kirkwood, Ian Glantz and Miguel Moitas, and youth, with Harry Busbridge, Alex Bithrey and Sam Flannery, did enough to triumph.

The trophy was first contested in 1934 and first won by South Beds in 1961.

The foursomes competition is played over two days, and South Beds came fourth from the 12 competing teams in the Saturday 36-hole stableford qualifier behind Worthing, East Sussex National and Woburn.

The Sunday morning semi-final knockout against Woburn was tied until a thrilling play-off was won by Bithrey and Busbridge with a birdie on the first extra hole.

The 18-hole final was tightly contested on Sunday afternoon against the home club, but strong play by all the South Beds players enabled them to triumph, winning all three matches to secure the trophy and bring it back to Bedfordshire for the 10th time.

After 54 holes the South Beds players had finally got the measure of the tricky Worthing greens and were able to beat the home team over the final 18 holes
