There was no sign early in the match that there would be an upset as captain Steve Wells and fourth string Paul Main kicked off proceedings, with both players beaten rather too easily 3-0 against Simon Bloomfield and Steve Mullins respectively.

Steve McCoy, making a rare appearance at fifth string, played very well to win 3-1 and begin the fightback.

His son, Sam McCoy, took on the experienced Trevor Keddo and quickly went into a 2-0 lead, before taking his foot off the gas and losing the third game.

He managed to regroup though and closed the match out to triumph 3-1.

With the fixture at two legs each, it was down to county number one Steve Davies to finish off the job, which he did by beating Gary Milner 3-0 in no time at all.

Captain Wells said: “The second half of the season has seen a big improvement and with only one game to go it would be fitting to end on a winning note at home to David Lloyd IIs, a side we have beaten already this season. A comfortable mid-table finish would be a great achievement given the developmental nature of the side.”

The firsts also recorded a 15-7 win at home to MK Squash.
