SQUASH: LDSC fall agonisingly short

It was once again a case of what might have been for Luton & Dunstable Squash Club as they competed in the National Squash Clubs Championships at the weekend in Nottingham, losing out in dramatic style to eventual winners Colets in the semi-finals.

The team were in confident mood as they faced Colets, but things started disastrously when number third string Adam Auckland lost unexpectedly to Scott Handley, while on the other court, a far from fit captain Steve Davies battled bravely before going down 3-0.

That meant the pressure was all on the remaining players to win all their matches to make the final.

At number one string, Daryl Selby defeated Adrian Grant 3-1 in an almost carbon copy of their match less than 24 hours before while competing for the BSPA Grand Prix final.

Joe Green, 19, then produced the performance of the weekend by thrashing former world ranked number four Alex Gough 3-0 in the result of the weekend.

That meant the outcome rested on the final match between LDSC’s Adrian Waller and the xperienced Jonathan Kemp, who retired as a professional player only last week.

Kemp is renowned as being a terrific racket player, but also tremendously inconsistent, although this time he was in no mood to take prisoners as he played very tight squash and squeezed Waller out to ended LDSC’s challenge.

The following day, LDSC took on Pontefract in the third place play-off match and thrashed their opponents 5-0 in little over an hour.

The Men’s Over 45 side were also due to compete at the weekend in the Final of the Plate, however, their opponents Queens, couldn’t get enough players to provide opposition and thus forfeited the match.
