SQUASH: Young Natalie is the Mega Main attraction at Finals

The series takes the form of five one-day tournaments across the region, with the top two players in the series winning a trip to the prestigious Canary Wharf in March.

There the players are coached by squash legend Peter Nicol on the all glass show court and then get to watch the professionals in action during the evening.

The final leg took place in Ipswich and 10-year-old Main was well placed to grab one of the two spots up for grabs having won two legs and been runner-up in another.

With her main competitor Ella Tunon from Kent holding an identical record and with both having missed one leg, Rebecca Woolf from Essex could have spoiled the party having come third or higher in all the other legs, and having beaten Main in the Cambridgeshire leg.

The draw could not have been kinder to Main who won her first three matches to take her place in the final and all but guarantee a top-two finish. Results in the other half of the draw saw Tunon beat Woolf with relative ease to set up a fitting climax to the event.

The first game in the best of three final was as tight as all had expected with both players playing great squash and trading points evenly and ended up in a tense tie-break, where Main passed up four game balls before finally prevailing 14-12.

The second started in the same fashion, however, the physical impact of the first had clearly taken its toll on the Kent youngster as her movement slowed and Main took advantage as the game wore on and she raced to a 10-4 lead.

However, championship ball is always the most difficult and Main clearly felt the nerves as she tensed up and gave away two easy points.

She was not to be denied though as a lung bursting rally ended in bizarre fashion as Main reached a shot which looked impossible to triumph.
