Youngsters impress in Cross-Country Champs

Luton AC’s young athletes represented their schools on Wednesday in the County Schools Cross-Country Championships at Ampthill Park.

A place in the top eight was the target to gain selection for the Bedfordshire team at the English Schools Championships in March at Wollaton Park, Nottingham, and Icknield School duo Jamal Lewis and Nathan Bangs managed it in style by winning their respective races.

Bangs ran intelligently to take the lead in the latter stages, while Lewis underlined his growing reputation by leading from start to finish and, despite being a year younger than most of his rivals, won by over 30 seconds.

Revee Walcott-Nolan also won the Inter girls race in style with Ellie Still from Lea Manor finishing third.

Hannah Farmer (ninth) Summer Rozanowski (10th) and Sophie Billington (11th) narrowly missed out on team places.

Tom Mead, Sean Still and Daniel Johnson will be in Nottingham though, after coming third, fourth and fifth in the Senior Boys race, while joining them are Junior girls Amalia Edwards (third), Michelle Lathwell (sixth) and Adeya Edwards (eighth).

Amy O’Malley from Barnfield West also finished a creditable seventh in the Lower Junior girls race.
