SWIMMING: Two club records broken in first ever Tom Williams Cup
Dunstable hosted the inaugural Tom Williams Cup at Dunstable Leisure Centre recently to commemorate the life of the former swimmer who is greatly missed by everyone at the club.
DSC invited along Flitwick, Linslade Crusaders, Potters Bar, Reading and Witney, for what was an outstanding night of racing.
From the outset the huge crowd of spectators were spellbound as DSC’s determination to win was shown by their 10 first places by event 20.
Showing some exceptional team spirit DSC pulled out some magical relays, as by event 30 they were some 17 points ahead of Linslade in second place.
With everything to swim for Dunstable kept battling on, and this really came to the fore in the last session of racing with 11 events to go.
DSC pulled off a staggering eight victories, including the amazing squadron at the end as they were much deserved winner of The Tom Williams Cup.
They picked up 23 first places and nine seconds throughout, as plenty of personal bests were achieved, while swimmers of the gala went to Isabella Porzio and Bryony Mathias.
DSC also had two new club records achieved at the gala, with Will Richards breaking the boys 15yrs 100m breaststroke in 1.13.68mins, previously set by Greg Ackroyd in 1.14.83mins in 1985.
Meanwhile, in the mens Open 50m butterfly, Michael Judd clocked 27.53secs to beat Matthew Ridout’s time of 28.54secs.
DSC also raised over £1,300 to be donated to CHUMS charity, with the club thanking all the volunteers who have officiated, raised funds on the night or assisted, plus those who helped out with raffle prizes.
