The hosts had got off to a flying start with an early try, but were pegged back thanksto Kevin Boland’s penalty.

Dave Marshall’s side then surged into the lead after Matt Anderson went over following a fine run and Boland’s conversion made it 10-5.

Wellingborough hit back with two tries in quick succession, one converted to open up a 17-10 lead, but Dees remained undaunted.

A superb tackle in the centre of the pitch by Ashley Warren won possession, which allowed Pete Thompson to feed Jordan Warner, who sped down the line for the try, the extras drawing Dees level.

Warner, whose lightning-pace caused the opposition problems throughout the game, sent Dees into half time with a 22-17 lead after another brilliant solo run.

Wellingborough drew first blood in the second half, as they notched a converted try to move 24-22 in front.

Despite relentless pressure from Dees, it seemed the chance of victory was slipping away, but they were rewarded thanks to Thompson’s drop kick in the dying seconds.

Dunstablians now host Newbold on Avon in the first round of the Midlands Intermediate Cup on Saturday.
