Vauxhall Chiltern claim a valiant draw

Hockey: Despite missing the majority of their regular first team players, Vauxhall Chiltern put in a fantastic performance to draw 1-1 with Bishop’s Stortford IIIs in Division One of the Five Counties Women’s League.

The second team stand-ins played out of their skin as Alexis Broadway tucked Chiltern’s goal in in the first half.

Stortford netted when keeper Katie Williams came out to meet a high ball with her chest pads only for it to bounce out of sight to the Stortford player who slotted it behind her in the second half.

Chiltern defended well as Williams tickled another ball off the back line and defender Karen Murphy cleared off the line.

Kathryn Ward was Vauxhall’s player of the match and this week they take on Leighton Buzzard’s first team in the first round of the England Hockey Vase Competition.

The Division Four encounter between Luton IIIs and Vauxhall Chiltern IIs was cancelled as the Luton side couldn’t raise a team, while Vauxhall Chiltern IIIs beat Royston IIIs 4-1 in Division Six thanks to goals from Loraine Cherrill, player of the match Gill Sentinella, Vicky Spencer and Shanelle Walker.

It was a brilliant performance from Chiltern who also had a second Sentinella strike ruled out.
