How a touch of Luton luxury transformed my budget break to Amsterdam

Instead of setting a 3am alarm and hoping the taxi arrived in time, I woke in a big bed, sipping tea and hearing distant planes.

It made a welcome change from the usual chaos of catching an early, cheap flight from Luton Airport.

But The Courtyard by Marriott Luton Airport wasn’t just a place to sleep before our Amsterdam trip; it was the ideal way to start and finish the city break.

Modern and bright, the hotel felt polished and welcoming from the moment we arrived. Meeting my partner in the lobby before heading up in the lift, it was clear that every detail had been considered to make travel smoother and more enjoyable.

The room was thoughtfully designed and comfortable. The plush bed was large enough for both of us to stretch out without feeling cramped, and the mood lighting created a calm, relaxing atmosphere. The walk-in shower was a highlight: spacious, luxurious, and stocked with Niverae Botanical toiletries.

The minibar offered a selection of drinks and snacks, including beer and fizz, J2Os, water, Pringles, nuts, and vegetable crisps. Small touches, like takeaway coffee cups, quiet hallway carpets, and a well-stocked marketplace, make the stay effortless.

Getting to the terminal is easy, with a short shuttle or a manageable walk, but the real game-changer is the fast-track security. We were through in under five minutes, skipping the usual queues and travel carnage. For early-morning departures, this is a huge advantage, allowing guests to start their trip calm and stress-free.

The No. 1 Lounge had everything we needed. Andrea and Corina welcomed us warmly, and we enjoyed a glass of pink fizz while watching snow fall outside, without the usual scramble for seating. The lounge offers comfortable seating, good coffee with syrup, a bacon bap, a parfait bar, and subtle background music. Even with a delayed flight, the lounge made waiting enjoyable rather than tedious.

Our trip to Amsterdam was just the right way to start off our Christmas festivities, and by choosing early-morning and late-night flights, and an apartment in a quiet neighbourhood, we kept costs low.

Returning after Amsterdam, the hotel gave us the same comfort. It was a relief to know we were returning to the tranquillity of the Marriott, instead of facing the drive straight back home.

Walking from the terminal was easy, the room was quiet, and breakfast was excellent.

Me and my sweet tooth immediately went to the pancake station, while my partner enjoyed fresh fruit, some cold cuts and eggs.

The attentive staff, who made a thoughtful gesture of keeping my forgotten charger ready, made the stay seamless.

The Courtyard by Marriott Luton Airport really levelled up the start and end of a trip. With stylish rooms, a luxurious shower, mood lighting, No. 1’s well-equipped lounge, fast-track security, and thoughtful details throughout, these extras meant that our budget break had an air of luxury, and not at a huge cost.
