Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity launches new fund to support projects and services for patients and staff

Patients and staff at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are set to benefit from a new fund which will help support projects and services across the Trust.

The Impact Fund was launched on April 27 by Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity and will prioritise three key areas within Bedford Hospital and Luton and Dunstable University Hospital – improving patient care and experience; supporting staff to make a difference; and enabling innovation for the benefit of our patients.

Sarah Amexheta, head of charity, said: “The launch of our new Impact Fund marks an exciting step forward for the Charity and the communities we serve. It enables us to respond more quickly and creatively to the needs of our patients, families, carers and colleagues - funding projects that make a real and immediate difference to people’s experiences of care.”

The Impact Fund will support enhancements across the Trust that may otherwise not be possible due to financial pressure.

Sarah continued: “What makes this fund so powerful is its flexibility; it allows us to support both innovative ideas and smaller, everyday enhancements that might otherwise go unfunded, but which have a profound impact on wellbeing, dignity and recovery.

“I’m incredibly proud of what this represents - not just as a funding stream, but as a reflection of our commitment to listening, responding, and continually improving the environments and services across our hospitals.”

The Impact Fund will replace the General Fund, which has made a significant contribution towards improvements for both staff and patients at the Trust. This includes:

  • Purchasing an Orsim Device, a new piece of equipment to support staff training in fibre optic bronchoscopy.

  • Launching the Forget-Me-Not Service, a volunteering programme providing companionship, reassurance and activities for hospital patients, especially those living with dementia.

  • Purchasing Mindmaze, an app providing digital therapy aimed at patients who have suffered from a stroke, have dementia, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.

  • Purchasing two magic carpet machines, which offer a wide variety of interactive projections that display motion responsive games and activities onto floors, tables and beds.

  • Recognising, celebrating and supporting our staff by allowing us to say ‘thank you’ through the Trust’s annual Long Service Awards and staff engagement events.
