Nadine was the keynote speaker at the University’s ‘Powered by Experience’ public lecture, held at the Luton campus and streamed live online. The event also formed part of the University’s Black History Month activities, celebrating Black voices, experiences and contributions while creating opportunities for meaningful discussion and learning.

During her talk, Nadine reflected on how she has built a career telling stories that might otherwise go unheard. She spoke about founding Black Current News and making her debut documentary, Barrel Children: The Families Windrush Left Behind, which became a UK box-office hit.

Nadine’s keynote was followed by a panel discussion featuring Carly Ramirez-Herelle, co-chair of the University’s Race Equality Network and Head of Library & Academy Services, alongside Media, Marketing & PR student Carlo Moo and Computer Science student Aeesha Adedokun.

The panel explored the realities of building a career in competitive creative industries, with Nadine sharing practical advice on creating opportunities, developing professional networks and navigating barriers to progression. The discussion also addressed the importance of challenging inequalities and ensuring underrepresented voices are heard.

An audience Q&A gave attendees the opportunity to put their own questions to Nadine, exploring how aspiring journalists and creatives can make their mark, build meaningful connections and use their platforms to tell stories that matter.

The event forms part of the University’s ‘Powered by Experience’ public lecture series, which brings leading professionals to the University to share their experiences, offer industry insights and inspire discussion across the university and wider community. The series supports the University’s commitment to Career-Powered Education, connecting learning with real-world experience and helping students develop the skills, confidence and knowledge to pursue their chosen careers.
