Local man to join 50km hiking challenge for Breast Cancer Now
“I think patience will be required during the event. We’ll be walking for 10 to 12 hours continuously"
Regular mountain biker and hiker Husam Ali, 36, from Luton, is taking part in the Everyone Active East Region 9-Edges XL Challenge on 7 May.
Husam, who used to work for a company helping to support oncology patients and has had several family members affected by cancer, will be part of the team trying to raise £7,500 for Breast Cancer Now hiking the extended 50km Peak District route.
A membership advisor at Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre, which is managed by the award-winning operator, Everyone Active, an agent for Central Bedfordshire Council, Husam has been training in the gym as well as on the Chiltern Hills locally.
He finds getting outside in nature is beneficial to his mental health but has been using the treadmill and stairmaster in the gym to help train for the elevation of the challenge. Outside, he’s usually alone and says it will be different for him working in a team during the event.
He said: “I think patience will be required during the event. We’ll be walking for 10 to 12 hours continuously. I’ve been following a realistic plan in my training, slowly increasing the intensity. I have to remember this is not a race. The challenge is a team of like-minded people hiking together towards a mutual goal for a special cause.”
Husam would also like to thank everyone who has already donated towards his fundraising for Breast Cancer Now, an Everyone Active partner charity. “Even the price of a coffee goes a long way in our fundraising. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our cause, helping this charity find solutions to this complex condition,” he added.
