easyJet unveils plans for new head office in Luton tipped for 2022

Amid fears of a Brexit backlash, the move demonstrates easyJet’s "ongoing commitment to Luton" 25 years after it was founded in the town.

The new office will enable the airline to provide an innovative and highly functional new workplace for up to 1950 people which will provide quality jobs for the town and wider region.

Neil Slaven, easyJet UK Country Director, commented: “Luton has always been easyJet’s home from when we had one aircraft to the present day twenty five years later when we have nearly 340 planes, fly on more than 1000 routes and are part of the FTSE100 - and we remain proud of our heritage here.

“We want to create a workplace Luton can be proud of, which attracts and retains great talent. We will invest in the building and its surroundings and wider area over the long term – built for today’s workforce but with an eye on the future.

“This ambitious project will allow easyJet to continue to play a pivotal positive role as a major local employer, creating jobs and opportunities for the local community.”

easyJet currently employs 2,700 people in Luton including 350 pilots, 650 cabin crew, 300 in engineering and maintenance and the remaining 1,400 office and management staff.

Around 25% of the company's employees live in Luton itself.

The proposed new building will be built on an old car parking site at Vauxhall Waywhich, if given planning permission, is due to start this autumn along with the promise of new jobs for the future.

The airline will begin its public consultation process in coming days to allow the public to see the plans.

A company spokesman added: "The building will provide a modern and innovative space built not only in line with the airline’s efficiency values front of mind but also incorporating the latest in sustainability initiatives - further cementing our commitment to lead on sustainability within the industry."
