The first death of coronavirus in the Luton area has been reported after a man in his 80s died at Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

David Carter, chief executive at the L&D NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We can confirm that sadly, a patient in his 80s with underlying medical conditions, who tested positive for COVID-19, passed away over the weekend at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital.

“Our thoughts and condolences remain with the patient’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

Luton so far has had 15 reported cases of coronavirus and Central Bedfordshire has 19.

Nationally, the number of UK diagnoses stands at 6,650 with 335 deaths attributed to the disease.

Today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson laid down further restrictions barring all outdoor activities except for food shopping, one daily outdoor exercise, medical care and essential travel to and from work in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.
