Memories of an ‘inspirational’ drums teacher

Tributes are pouring in for a “legendary” musician and local drum teacher who died on June 6.

Freddie Wells, who was 81, taught the drums for more than 60 years in schools including Stospley High School in Luton and Northfields, Manshead and Queensbury High Schools in Dunstable.

The father-of-three and grandfather -of-seven was still teaching from the conservatory at his home in Nappsbury Road, Leagrave, until a few weeks before his death.

Son Neil said: “He was a true gentleman, who always saw the best in everyone. A kind and gentle man, his generosity of spirit touched the lives of all those who knew him.”

Taught by the famous Eric Delaney, Freddie went on to play for the Mid-Herts Big Band, the Vauxhall Concert Band, and many productions for St Andrew’s Players.

He also accompanied performers including Dusty Springfield, Joe Dolce and The Mudlarks and spent several years as the principle drummer in the house band at Luton’s Majestic Ballroom.

Freddie was evacuated to St Albans during the Second World War and worked at Vauxhall Motors in Luton for 38 years.

He leaves behind his wife, Ann, to whom he was married for 53 years. Freddie’s funeral takes place at 2pm on Tuesday June 25 at The Vale Cemetery chapel.
