'Safety is our number one priority': Plans to solve Bury Park traffic issue revealed ahead of Luton Council decision

A list of recommendations to make Bury Park safer for drivers and pedestrians has been unveiled by the council in a bid to tackle long-standing congestion and parking issues.

The plans are part of measures to address the ongoing problems with safety and access around Bury Park, the council says.

Its recommendations include an 18-month trial red route meaning no vehicles can stop on certain roads; 120 spaces for car parking at Luton Town Football Club (except for matchdays and the day before); footway parking restrictions to stop people parking on pavements; and increasing the maximum stay for disabled bays to 90 minutes.

But a plan for a one-way system in Kenilworth Road has been scrapped after feedback from the community.

The recommendations were shaped by comments from residents, businesses and faith groups in the area.

The measures would be reviewed after six months and again after 12 months to look at the impact they are having, before more future decisions are made.

A council spokesperson said: “Bury Park has experienced long-standing issues relating to road safety, congestion and dangerous parking. Safety is our number one priority and these recommendations are intended to improve traffic flow, reduce dangerous parking and ensure pavements and key junctions remain clear.

“We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their views and ideas during last year’s consultation. That feedback from residents, businesses, faith groups and other organisations has directly influenced the recommendations and mitigations now being put forward.”

The consultation and report will be taken to the council’s overview and scrutiny board on July 27, with a final decision to be made in August.
